UTM Grid Map Online
MapGridder draws a live UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) grid on an interactive map, so you can read a UTM easting and northing for any point as you pan and zoom. UTM splits the world into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, and gives every point in a zone a position in meters east and north, which is why its grid lines are square and evenly spaced on the ground.
What you can do
- Live UTM grid that stays aligned while you pan and zoom
- Grid spacing from 100 km squares down to 1 meter
- Zone labels and principal digits along the map edges, the military map convention
- Switch the same grid to MGRS without redrawing anything
- Print the gridded map as a PDF at a true scale
Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM grid overlay?
It is a set of square grid lines drawn on a map at fixed metric spacing inside a UTM zone. Each line marks a round easting or northing value, so you can read a UTM coordinate like 30N 699316E 5710164N straight off the map.
What is the difference between UTM and MGRS?
They share the same zones and the same meters. UTM writes a position as a zone plus a full easting and northing in meters. MGRS shortens that into a zone, a 100 km square code and paired digits, for example 30U XC 99316 10163. The grid lines are in the same places; only the labels differ.
Is the UTM grid overlay free?
Yes. Overlaying the grid runs in your browser with no login and no install. A quick, free sign-in is only needed to export or to save maps to your account. Personal and non-commercial use is free; commercial use needs a paid license.
What do easting and northing mean?
Easting is the distance in meters east of the zone's reference line, and northing is the distance in meters north of the equator (in the southern hemisphere, from a 10,000,000 m offset). Read the easting first, then the northing.
Does UTM cover the whole world?
UTM covers everything between 80 degrees south and 84 degrees north. The polar caps use the separate UPS system, so the grid is not drawn there.
Can I print a map with the UTM grid on it?
Yes. Export the map as a PDF at a true scale such as 1:25,000 or 1:50,000, with the grid, labels and anything you drew on it, so a ruler or protractor reads real distances on paper.
